The ancient city of Kamyanets-Podilski is the center of the Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park. The Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park is the largest national park in Ukraine(Khmelnytska Oblast). It has an area of 261316 ha.
The Tovtry Ridge is unique landscape, that is a remainder of the barrier-reef from the Sarmatian Sea(15-20 million years ago) and canyons of the Dnister River and its inflows, wich were formed by the sediments of the Ancient epochs(500-300 million years ago). Here you can find many rare species of plants and animals, which are protected in Europe and Ukraine.
The Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park was established according to the Presidential Decree No.176/96 on 27/06/96.
The Smotrych River Canyon is a unique view, created by the nature over 2000 millions years ago on the ancient Kamenets. The Smotrych River, winding through the Silurian Rocks, makes up peculiar meanders. The River, flowing in the canyon(40 metres deep), surrounds and separates the stone island, with the Old Town situated on it.

Kamyanets-Podilski, the city on the Smotrych River is famous from the written mentiones the II century A.D. geographer Claudiy Ptolomey, who writes that Kamenets was an ancient city of Klepidav(Petrydav) – city on the rock. But people inhabited these lands in the ancient epochs. The Trypiltsi lived here in the IV-III milleniums B.C.
In the II-X centuries the Slavonic tribes of the Chernia hivska culture(who’s remains were found in several places) and the Tivrtsi, also, in the territory of the city.
In 1362 the Lithuianian Prince Olgerd defeated the Tatars and Mongols and passed the lands of Podillya to the Koriatovych brothers. The city became the center of Podillya. The Prince’s palace and churches were built in Kamenets. The fortress for defens against Tatars and Mongols was built in the southwestern part of the city.
In 1434 Podillya was joined to Poland . The Polish Province with the center in Kamenets was then formed.
From 1672 to 1699 Osmanian Turkey extended its possesins to Kamenets. After liberation by the Poles city became a part of the Rich Pospolyta(Poland) again. In 1795 the city became the center of the Podilski Province of Russian Empire.
Due to orignality of the Smotrych River Canyon, the NNP and the city are applying for the status of the World Heritage listing under UNESCO protection, for the canyon.
